Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg believes Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter Riyan Parag had a ‘bit of ego’ last year which hindered his performances. Despite last year’s failures, Parag has come back strong in the 2024 season with the ex-wrist spinner lauding him for the maturity displayed.

The right-hand dasher has been pushed up the order at no. 4 by the RR thinktank this year and the results have been there to see. Parag has single-handedly helped RR maintain an unbeaten start to the season.

“I am really liking when I am seeing young (Riyan) Parag. I think he has really matured this year. I don’t say this disrespectfully but I think he had a bit of ego last year,” said Hogg on a NDTV podcast.

“The ego is still there but it is in control. He believes in himself and he is now more worried about what he can do for the team rather than trying to seal his place in the team,” he added.

In four matches so far, Parag has amassed 185 runs at an astounding average of 92.50 and a strike rate of 158.11. He has already donned the Orange Cap once and remains firmly in contention to secure it by the end of the tournament.

RR on their way to the playoffs spot

Not many cricket pundits had RR at the top of the table in their predictions prior to the tournament but the 2008 champions have surprised everyone with their dominating performances.

Led by a cool head in Sanju Samson, RR appear to be the most well-rounded team with all departments firing at the same time, according to the Australian.

“According to me, Rajasthan Royals are the best-balanced team in the tournament. I like the way how they have set their entire lineup. If Sandeep Sharma can get fully-fit as well, then he can add up as the sixth bowling option for them,” Hogg said.

RR will attempt to make it five in five when they take the field against Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Wednesday (Apr 10). Titans will be bruising after a disappointing loss against Lucknow Super Giants and would be determined to hurt RR.
