Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed the Indian Premier League (IPL) record for the highest team total in the competition’s history on Wednesday (Mar 27) after they scored runs left, right and center. Playing in their first home match of the IPL 2024 season at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad against five-time champions Mumbai Indians, SRH put on 277/3 in their 20 overs to break the previous record set by Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Heinrich Klaasen (80 unbeaten), Travis Head (62) and Abhishek Sharma were the architects of the big total.

Asked to bat first, SRH were seen at their fluent best with Head taking 18 balls to complete his fifty smashing the previous record set by his Aussie compatriot and former captain David Warner in 2015 and 2017. Head looked in great form, similar to his exploits in the ODI World Cup final against India in November. He was then joined by Abhishek Sharma as he broke Head’s record in just 20 minutes to score another fifty on the night. He departed for 63 off 23 which set the tone for Klassen and Aiden Markram to lead the charge.
Interestingly, in the powerplay alone SRH scored 81 runs while they were 148/2 after 10 overs and were smashing at 14.8 runs per over.

In the final five overs, 75 runs were scored in the SRH innings with Klassen scoring an unbeaten 80. His innings included 7 sixes and 4 fours while Abhishek also smashed 7 sixes. In total 18 sixes were scored in the match as SRH ran riot in the context.
What happened in the match?
At the time of writing, MI are 126/2 and needed 146 runs to win in 63 balls in an entertaining evening in Hyderabad. Tilak Varma is batting on 40 off 21 while Naman Dhir is on 26 off 12 for the five-time champions. Rohit Sharma (26) and Ishan Kishan (34) were also seen in good form as they gave a good start but had to depart before scoring big innings.
