On an already record-breaking night at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, records were smashed left, right and center as Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma ran riot with the bat. Playing in their first home match of the season, Sunrisers Hyderabad had an evening to remember as their star batters stole the spotlight in Rohit Sharma’s 200th Indian Premier League (IPL) appearance for Mumbai Indians. First Head broke the record for the fastest fifty in the SRH’s history before that record was smashed by Abhishek 20 minutes later in the same match.

Having opted to ball first, it was a decision that completely backfired on Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya as the SRH batters were in big scoring mood. It took Head 18 balls to complete his fifty smashing the previous record set by his Aussie compatriot and former captain David Warner in 2015 and 2017. Head looked in great form, similar to his exploits in the ODI World Cup final against India in November. He was not done there and tried to go big before he was caught by Naman Dhir.
Interestingly, in the powerplay alone SRH scored 81 runs while they were 148/2 after 10 overs and were smashing at 14.8 runs per over.

What happened in the match?
At the time of writing, MI are 126/2 and need 146 runs to win in 63 balls in an entertaining evening in Hyderabad. Tilak Varma is batting on 40 off 21 while Naman Dhir is on 26 off 12 for the five-time champions. Rohit Sharma (26) and Ishan Kishan (34) were also seen in good form as they gave a good start but had to depart before scoring big innings.
SRH had earlier smashed the IPL record for the highest team total in the competition’s history after they scored runs left, right and centre. Playing in their first home match of the IPL 2024 against five-time champions Mumbai Indians, SRH put on 277/3 in their 20 overs to break the previous record set by Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Heinrich Klaasen (80 unbeaten), Travis Head (62) and Abhishek Sharma were the architects of the big total.
