IPL 2024: Jasprit Bumrah leaves Stuart Broad, Steve Smith speechless with ruthless spell against GT

It’s not the first time when the ace India seamer Jasprit Bumrah has turned heads worldwide with his bowling performance. Bumrah made an emphatic return to the Indian Premier League this season, having missed it entirely the last year due to a stress fracture, and picked up three wickets for 13 in his four overs against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Stuart Broad and Steve Smith, two Test greats, applauded Bumrah for his impeccable skill of bowling the toe-breaking yorker and picking a wicket on the same.

Having had a successful run in the lead-up to this tournament, with star performances beginning from the 2023 World Cup, away South Africa tour to the home Test series against England, Bumrah delivered on his return match for MI. He first dismissed GT opener Wriddhiman Saha, clean bowled on a yorker, before accounting for two dangerous batters in Sai Sudharsan and David Miller later in the innings.

Speaking on Star Sports, Broad, who has had a history with Bumrah in Tests, having conceded 35 runs in one over against him, couldn’t stop but hail Bumrah for his performance. Broad said with the pace Bumrah generates and the trajectory he gets, it’s almost impossible to get away with that.

“That’s what he does, it’s just his trademark. He will beat you with the pace. He will beat you with his trajectory. It’s an interesting one with the new ball; I feel like he asked to come on and get the first wicket of the day and set the tone,” Broad said on Star Sports.

“But whatever he is going to use, he is going to be successful because of so much skill and so much talent. And it’s just up to Hardik and team and management to figure out exactly where that will work,” Broad, who retired from all formats last year, added.

Smith in awe of Bumrah

Having faced each other on countless occasions before, Steve Smith remained in awe of Bumrah, and said, “He (Bumrah) is such a good bowler. We know that he has been such an unbelievable bowler for so many years. It’s great to see him back after obviously missing last year.”

“He created a good impact in the very first game. He bowled beautifully: 3 for 14, on what looked like a pretty good wicket. I think playing here, it doesn’t give you much but try to get to wickets, and that’s the best place to be,” Smith said on the channel.

However, despite Bumrah’s heroics, Mumbai Indians failed to win their season opener against Gujarat, losing by six runs.
