It was a chaotic Sunday (Jan 28) in Test cricket as England and West Indies secured famous victories on either side of the globe to shake the World Test Championship (WTC) table upside-down. While India suffered a historic defeat despite leading by 190 runs in the first innings, West Indies had their man of the moment Shamar Joseph to thank after he helped them beat Australia for the first time since 1997 in their own backyard.

India suffer catastrophic defeat

Leading by 190 runs after the first innings, England’s master class led by Ollie Pope saw them register an emphatic 28-run win at the Rajiv Gandhi International. After bowling out England for 246, India scored 436 runs and established a 190-run lead. However, Pope’s 196-run knock helped England post a lead of 230 runs which proved to be the difference-maker. Chasing 231, India were bowled out for 202 with Tom Hartley scalping seven wickets.

After the defeat, India slipped to fifth spot from second and have two wins and two defeats along with a draw in their five matches of the WTC cycle. India have a win percentage of 43.33 and still have four matches remaining to play in the five-match Test series. England on the other hand are eighth with a win percentage of 29.16 from six matches. So far they have won three matches, lost two and drawn one.

WTC standings after West Indies’ historic win

The win for West Indies did favour to them as they leapfrogged England in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. The Caribbean side currently sits seventh with a win percentage of 33.33 from four matches. The win was also their first in the ongoing WTC cycle in four matches with two defeats.

Despite their defeat to West Indies, Australia continue to lead the charts in the WTC standings and have a win percentage of 55.00 after 10 matches. They have so far registered six wins and a draw while they have faced defeat on three occasions.
