Although his contract was due to run until early 2027, Malan believes this is the ideal time to hand over responsibilities and allow a new coach to lead the team into the crucial build-up for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.
The decision comes just days after Ireland secured a memorable T20I series victory over India, one of the biggest accomplishments in the nation’s cricket history. Malan described the timing as the perfect opportunity to ensure a smooth transition ahead of Ireland’s next major objective. Ireland Cricket is yet to announce his successor, but the new head coach is expected to take charge before the five-match ODI series against Afghanistan in August.
Appointed as Ireland head coach in 2022, Malan oversaw one of the most successful periods in the team’s history. Under his leadership, Ireland qualified for three consecutive ICC Men’s T20 World Cups and recorded three historic Test victories. The highlights included a famous T20 World Cup win over England in Melbourne, Ireland’s maiden Test victory against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, their first-ever home Test win against Zimbabwe in Belfast, the recent T20I series triumph over India, and memorable victories against Pakistan, West Indies, and South Africa.
Reflecting on his journey, Malan expressed heartfelt gratitude to the players, coaching staff, and the wider Irish cricket community. He said it had been an absolute privilege to work with the team and added that his family had enjoyed their time living in Ireland, describing the experience as one they would always cherish.
The coaching change comes at an important stage for Irish cricket. Ireland currently sits 11th in the ICC ODI rankings and may have to compete in the global qualification tournament to secure a place in the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The upcoming edition will feature 14 teams, increasing Ireland’s chances of returning to the tournament for the first time since 2015.
Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, Graeme West, said discussions about the upcoming World Cup qualification campaign led both parties to conclude that this was the right time for a transition. He praised Malan’s contribution to Irish cricket, highlighting his efforts in strengthening the national team’s talent pool and building greater squad depth for the future.
With Heinrich Malan’s departure, Ireland now enters a new chapter as it looks to build on recent successes and continue its progress on the international stage. The incoming head coach will inherit a confident squad with the immediate challenge of preparing for the ODI World Cup qualification campaign and maintaining Ireland’s upward trajectory in world cricket.
