Kent Spitfires registered a convincing seven-wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks in the Vitality Blast at Canterbury on Sunday, handing the South Group leaders just their second defeat of the 2026 season. An impressive all-round display, led by Grant Stewart’s four-wicket spell and composed batting from Daniel Bell-Drummond and Sam Billings, helped Kent comfortably chase down a target of 177 with eight balls to spare.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Kent found themselves under pressure as Hampshire captain James Vince played a superb attacking innings. Vince smashed 84 runs and dominated the opening partnership, helping Hampshire race to 97 for 1 at the halfway stage. However, Kent’s bowlers staged an excellent comeback to restrict the visitors to 176 for 6 in their 20 overs.

Grant Stewart was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with outstanding figures of 4 for 32. He dismissed the dangerous Vince with his second delivery before also removing Joe Weatherley, Hilton Cartwright and Ben Mayes to derail Hampshire’s innings. Joe Denly chipped in with an important wicket, while Bell-Drummond produced a brilliant direct-hit run-out in the final over to dismiss Tristan Stubbs and ensure Hampshire managed only four runs from the last six deliveries.

Hampshire also suffered an injury scare when Hilton Cartwright went down while attempting a quick single. Although he resumed batting after receiving treatment, he failed to add to his score before becoming Stewart’s fourth wicket.

Kent’s chase got off to a solid start as Daniel Bell-Drummond and Harry Finch stitched together a crucial 95-run opening partnership. Bell-Drummond top-scored with a fluent 54, while Finch contributed a valuable 45 to put the hosts firmly in control of the run chase.

Despite Bell-Drummond’s dismissal and Zak Crawley’s brief stay at the crease, Kent never lost momentum. Sam Billings took charge during the middle overs, counter-attacking brilliantly with an unbeaten half-century. His innings featured several innovative strokes, including two ramped sixes off Sonny Baker and a reverse-swept six against Liam Dawson, keeping the required run rate comfortably under control.

Joe Denly added the finishing touches with a timely six before Billings sealed the victory in style, glancing Sonny Baker to the boundary with eight balls remaining to complete an unbeaten 50 and secure a memorable win for Kent.
