Egypt’s preparations for their decisive FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G encounter against Iran have been disrupted after local security authorities rejected the team’s request to travel directly from Vancouver to Seattle following their victory over New Zealand.

According to reports, Egypt had planned to send several key players directly to Seattle after securing a historic 3-1 win over New Zealand at BC Place in Vancouver on Sunday. The move was intended to help the squad prepare more efficiently for Friday’s final group-stage match against Iran. However, security officials declined the request, forcing the Egyptian delegation to alter its travel schedule.

“The security authorities refused the team’s request to stay in the city of Seattle as planned after the New Zealand match in the World Cup, and therefore the team’s delegation will return to the city of Spokane,” Egyptian Football Association official Hossam said in a statement.

Egypt had hoped to remain in Seattle during the week leading up to the Iran clash. Instead, the team will return to its training base in Spokane, located around 280 miles east of Seattle, before making the trip again for the match.

Despite the travel setback, Egypt enters the fixture with confidence after recording their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory. The Pharaohs produced an impressive second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 3-1 and boost their chances of reaching the Round of 32.

New Zealand started brightly and took control of the early stages. Sarpreet Singh and Elijah Just both threatened the Egyptian goal before goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir made crucial saves to keep his side in the contest. The All Whites eventually broke the deadlock when Finn Surman powered home a header from Tim Payne’s corner.

Egypt gradually found their rhythm before halftime, with Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah both testing the New Zealand defence. The momentum shifted completely after the break as the African side increased the intensity of their attacking play.

The equaliser arrived just before the hour mark when Mohamed Hany delivered a precise cross for Mostafa Ziko, who headed home from close range. Egypt completed the turnaround minutes later as Ziko combined brilliantly with captain Mohamed Salah, allowing the Liverpool star to finish clinically and put his side ahead.

Substitute Trezeguet sealed the victory in the 82nd minute, heading in Salah’s corner to complete a memorable comeback and secure a landmark World Cup win for Egypt.

With qualification to the knockout stages within reach, Egypt will now focus on overcoming the logistical challenges and preparing for a high-stakes showdown against Iran in their final Group G match.
