Division One newcomers continue impressive County Championship campaign with dominant victory over Surrey in Cardiff
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Glamorgan continued their remarkable return to Division One of the Rothesay County Championship with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Surrey, climbing into the top half of the standings after another impressive all-round performance in Cardiff.
Chasing a target of 195, Glamorgan were guided home by experienced batter Colin Ingram and captain Kiran Carlson, both of whom registered half-centuries to secure the hosts’ third win of the season. The victory further strengthens Glamorgan’s position among the leading contenders in Division One, while Surrey suffered only their second defeat in eight matches.
The visitors began the final day hoping to extend their resistance after batting throughout day three. Surrey’s last-wicket pair of Jordan Clark and Tom Lawes resumed with a 105-run partnership that had frustrated Glamorgan’s bowlers and significantly reduced the first-innings deficit.
Lawes continued his positive approach on the fourth morning, reaching his second half-century in four County Championship innings. However, Glamorgan eventually made the breakthrough when Ryan Hadley dismissed Clark, who top-edged a pull shot into the leg side. Hadley finished with impressive figures of 4 for 82 in what was his final appearance for Glamorgan.
Surrey added 49 runs to their overnight total before being dismissed, setting Glamorgan a target of 195. Considering they had been bowled out for just 105 in the first innings, Surrey’s recovery to post 447 in their second effort was a commendable fightback.
Glamorgan’s chase began nervously when Billy Root was run out in unusual circumstances after only four deliveries. A mix-up between the batters left both stranded at the non-striker’s end, allowing Surrey to claim an early wicket.
Carlson quickly settled any nerves by finding the boundary and taking control of the innings. The Glamorgan skipper continued his excellent Division One form, compiling another fluent half-century and sharing crucial partnerships that kept the chase on track.
Ingram provided the perfect support, punishing anything loose and taking a particular liking to leg-spinner Rahul Chahar. The left-hander swept confidently on both sides of the wicket and launched Chahar into the stands as Glamorgan seized control of the contest.
Although Chahar eventually removed Carlson, the damage had already been done. Sean Dickson then joined Ingram to add another important stand, steering the home side safely to victory.
Ingram remained unbeaten on 61, sealing the win in style and helping Glamorgan defeat Surrey in the County Championship for the first time in 11 years. The result underlines Glamorgan’s growing confidence in Division One and highlights their emergence as one of the season’s surprise packages.
