India have been dealt a major setback in the Women’s T20 World Cup, with offspin allrounder Shreyanka Patil ruled out of the tournament after suffering an ankle ligament injury during the match against the Netherlands.

Patil injured herself while chasing a ball at mid-on and twisted her ankle one ball into her spell. She was immediately in visible pain, unable to put any weight on her right leg and had to be stretchered off the field before being sent for scans.

Legspinner Prema Rawat has been named as her replacement and receives her first-ever call-up to the senior Indian team.

The 24-year-old has impressed in domestic cricket and represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the last two Women’s Premier League seasons. She was also part of the India A side that won the Rising Stars Women’s Asia Cup, claiming eight wickets at an economy rate of 4.27.

Patil’s latest setback adds to an unfortunate run of injuries over the past two years. A broken finger ruled her out of the 2024 T20 World Cup, while shin splints and a wrist stress reaction kept her sidelined for nearly a year before she returned during the 2025 Women’s CPL and later helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru win the WPL 2026 title.

India have made a strong start to the Women’s T20 World Cup, winning both of their opening matches against Pakistan and the Netherlands. Their next fixture is against South Africa on Sunday in Manchester.

Rawat’s promotion has also led to changes in the India A squads. Niki Prasad replaces her in the India A T20 squad for the England A series, while Minnu Mani takes her place in the India A one-day squad.
