Club hails former England star as its most significant off-field signing
Andrew Flintoff has been confirmed as the new head coach of Sydney Thunder, with the franchise describing the appointment as one of the most important off-field moves in its history.

Flintoff will take charge of a BBL side for the first time, adding another chapter to his growing coaching career. The former England all-rounder previously coached the Northern Superchargers, now known as Sunrisers Leeds, in the Hundred, guiding them to fourth and third-place finishes across the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

He has also served as coach of the England Lions and worked as a consultant with England’s white-ball squads, building a reputation as a modern coach with a strong focus on player development.

Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said Flintoff’s leadership qualities and understanding of Australian cricket made him the standout candidate.

“This is a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder and the BBL,” Copeland said. “Fred brings something truly unique. He’s a global icon, but more importantly a modern leader who understands how to build high-performance environments and connect with players.”

Flintoff replaces former England World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss, who spent five seasons with the club. Although Bayliss guided Thunder to the BBL final in 2024-25, the team also endured two last-place finishes during his tenure.

The former England captain is optimistic about the potential within the Thunder squad and believes there is a strong foundation for future success.

“I can’t wait to get over there and get started,” Flintoff said. “You look at the franchise, the players and the support, and I think there’s something really big to build on.”

Flintoff highlighted the blend of experienced stars and emerging talent within the squad, naming players such as David Warner, Chris Green, Daniel Sams, Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes and Tanveer Sangha as key figures in the club’s future.

He also stressed the importance of creating a culture where players enjoy representing the Thunder while maintaining high standards and a strong work ethic.

“I want players to play with passion and leave everything out on the field,” Flintoff said. “My aim is for every player to look back and think Sydney Thunder was the best part of their year.”

One of Flintoff’s first major decisions could involve the captaincy of Warner, who is currently facing legal proceedings after being charged with drink driving. The matter is scheduled to return to court later this month.

With a high-profile coach now at the helm and a talented squad at his disposal, Thunder will hope Flintoff can guide the club back into championship contention and establish a long-term winning culture in the BBL.
