England opener expects “fireworks” from batting partner ahead of India series decider
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Danni Wyatt-Hodge has thrown her support behind fellow opener Sophia Dunkley, insisting a big innings is just around the corner as England build towards the Women’s T20 World Cup.
Despite not yet converting her starts into a major score this summer, Dunkley has consistently provided positive intent at the top of the order. She has reached double figures in six of her seven innings for club and country, though her highest score remains 31.
Wyatt-Hodge, who recently returned from maternity leave after missing England’s opening T20Is against New Zealand and India, believes Dunkley’s aggressive approach will soon reap rewards.
“We all know how good Sophia is,” Wyatt-Hodge said. “Taking the game on from ball one is what she does best. Her intent has been unbelievable and I think a big score is just around the corner.”
The England veteran expects conditions in Taunton for the series decider against India to suit Dunkley’s attacking style.
“I’m expecting fireworks from Sophia tomorrow night,” Wyatt-Hodge added. “She’s been so successful for England over the last few years and we’ve put together some great partnerships.”
Dunkley faces increased competition for her opening spot after Alice Capsey impressed with an unbeaten 74 against India while filling in at the top of the order. With captain Nat Sciver-Brunt expected to return to the middle order after recovering from a calf injury, strong performances could prove crucial ahead of the World Cup.
Away from cricket, Wyatt-Hodge is enjoying a memorable period following the birth of her daughter Daisy just 12 days ago. The England batter described the first days of parenthood as “unbelievable” and said she was proud of her wife Georgie and their new addition to the family.
Back in the England setup, however, her focus has quickly shifted to cricket and the challenge of a home World Cup.
“There is a really good vibe around the group,” Wyatt-Hodge said. “Everyone is excited, but we’re trying to stay present and focus on what’s in front of us.”
England begin their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka women’s cricket team on June 12 and will carry the expectations that come with hosting a global tournament. England have won all four women’s World Cups previously staged on home soil, including the 2017 ODI World Cup that Wyatt-Hodge was part of.
Drawing on that experience, she urged the squad to focus on one game at a time rather than looking too far ahead.
“There’s probably going to be more pressure because it’s a home World Cup,” she said. “But these opportunities don’t come around often. We just need to enjoy it, focus on each game, and keep moving forward.”
With the World Cup now just days away, England will hope Dunkley can find the big score Wyatt-Hodge believes is imminent and provide momentum heading into the tournament.
