Experienced stars back for Pakistan while Australia test next generation ahead of 2027
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! With the 2027 ODI World Cup slowly coming into focus, both Pakistan and Australia are beginning to shape their squads for the future as opportunities in the 50-over format become increasingly limited.
Pakistan have recalled experienced stars Babar Azam, Naseem Shah and Shadab Khan after a disappointing ODI series loss in Bangladesh earlier this year. The squad also includes uncapped trio Rohail Nazir, Arafat Minhas and Ahmed Daniyal as the team looks to refresh its balance ahead of a crucial World Cup cycle.
Mohammad Rizwan, who captained Pakistan to an ODI series win in Australia in 2024, is a notable omission, while Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman and Usman Khan are unavailable due to injury and illness.
Australia, meanwhile, arrive heavily depleted with Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh all missing due to workload management, IPL commitments and injuries. Josh Inglis will captain the side as selectors use the series to test younger players and new combinations.
The tour also provides a major opportunity for Cameron Green, Matt Renshaw and Matt Short to cement their ODI roles, while 19-year-old Ollie Peake and allrounder Liam Scott could make their international debuts. Billy Stanlake’s return after seven years away from ODI cricket has also caught attention as Australia search for pace options ahead of the World Cup in southern Africa.
Babar Azam once again remains the centre of attention for Pakistan after an impressive PSL campaign, while Green’s explosive unbeaten century against South Africa in his last ODI innings has strengthened Australia’s belief in his finishing abilities.
The conditions in Rawalpindi are expected to play a major role, with heat, thunderstorms and evening dew likely to influence tactics and make the toss crucial.
