Former all-rounder to guide Australia through next phase until 2029
Shelley Nitschke will remain head coach of Australia women’s national cricket team until June 2029 after signing a three-year contract extension ahead of the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Nitschke took charge following Australia’s ODI World Cup triumph in 2022, replacing Matthew Mott, and quickly added more silverware by leading the side to Commonwealth Games gold later that year and the 2023 T20 World Cup title.
Despite Australia continuing to hold the No.1 rankings in both ODIs and T20Is, the team has endured rare disappointments in recent ICC events. Australia suffered semi-final exits against South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup and India in the 2025 ODI World Cup.
Cricket Australia has nevertheless backed Nitschke to continue leading the side into a new era, beginning with the 2026 T20 World Cup under newly appointed captain Sophie Molineux.
“It’s a privilege to continue coaching this team and working with such an outstanding group of players and staff,” Nitschke said. “We’ve achieved a great deal together, but there’s also enormous motivation around what this group can accomplish in the years ahead.”
The extension comes during a significant transition period for Australia women’s cricket. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy has already retired, while the long-term future of senior all-rounder Ellyse Perry remains uncertain as she approaches 36 later this year.
At the same time, young talent continues to emerge under Nitschke’s guidance. Georgia Voll has become a regular across all formats, while teenage pacer Lucy Hamilton has made her international debut in every format this year.
Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg praised Nitschke’s role in maintaining Australia’s dominance while successfully managing the team’s generational transition.
“She is successfully guiding a period of transition with some brilliant young players joining the team,” Greenberg said.
