Drafted into the side midway through the match as a concussion substitute for Saif Zaib, Kimber rose to the occasion with a stunning knock of 66 from just 69 deliveries in a tense chase of 249. Walking in with Northamptonshire still needing 95 runs and four wickets remaining, the 29-year-old played aggressively under pressure to swing the match decisively in the visitors’ favour.

Kimber’s innings included 11 boundaries and a six as he took control of the chase on a challenging pitch where batting had been difficult throughout the contest. His attacking approach shifted momentum away from Gloucestershire just when the home side sensed an opportunity for victory.

Australian Test batter Nathan McSweeney also played a vital role with a composed 46, while Lewis McManus stayed calm at the end with an unbeaten 22 to take Northamptonshire over the line before lunch.

The victory earned Northamptonshire 19 valuable points and kept their promotion hopes alive, while Gloucestershire were left with just three points after suffering their sixth defeat in seven red-ball matches this season.

Play on the final morning began 30 minutes late after heavy overnight rain forced the Bristol groundstaff into an early clean-up operation. Northamptonshire resumed on 144 for 5, still requiring 105 runs for victory.

Gloucestershire struck quickly when Will Williams trapped nightwatchman Harry Conway lbw for 5, reducing the visitors to 154 for 6 and reigniting hopes of a dramatic home win.

But Kimber responded immediately with a flurry of boundaries, attacking Craig Miles and Matt Taylor with powerful strokes through the leg side and covers. His fearless batting forced Gloucestershire captain Cameron Bancroft to constantly reshuffle his bowling options.

Williams briefly swung the contest back in Gloucestershire’s favour when he dismissed McSweeney lbw for 46, leaving Northamptonshire on 179 for 7 and still needing 70 runs.

However, Kimber continued his assault, especially against Luke Charlesworth, smashing boundaries and launching a six over deep midwicket in a game-changing over that brought the target rapidly down.

He reached his half-century in just 44 balls and pushed Northamptonshire beyond 200 as the pressure shifted firmly back onto the hosts.

Gloucestershire did manage one final breakthrough when Graeme van Buuren bowled Kimber for 66 with only 14 runs still needed, briefly exposing the tail and raising hopes of another twist.

But McManus held his composure superbly, clipping Matt Taylor to the square-leg boundary for the winning runs after the extra half hour had been taken before lunch.

The dramatic chase capped off a gripping low-scoring contest in Bristol, with Kimber’s aggressive innings ultimately proving the defining contribution in one of the most entertaining finishes of the County Championship round.
