The left-arm fast bowler had not played competitive cricket between IPL 2025 and IPL 2026 due to a back injury, but made an immediate impact on his CSK debut against Lucknow Super Giants by consistently bowling above 140kph and troubling batters with his pace and bounce.

Johnson finished with figures of 1 for 39 from his four overs, but his speed stood out as he hurried both Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis during the match in Lucknow. One delivery in particular sharply jagged back into Inglis from over the wicket, highlighting the rhythm and intensity he managed to generate despite his long break from competitive action.

Speaking ahead of CSK’s final home match of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Johnson said he was relieved to get through his comeback game and now feels more confident about building towards even higher pace.

“I feel like I’m really going to get better and faster,” Johnson said. “There was a bit of uncertainty after spending months bowling only in the nets, but getting through that first game gave me confidence that the rhythm is coming back.”

Before joining CSK as a replacement for fellow Australian quick Nathan Ellis in late April, Johnson worked closely with former Australia fast bowler Ryan Harris to fine-tune his bowling action and reduce stress on his back.

The adjustments mainly focused on running in straighter and ensuring his momentum stayed aligned during delivery, changes designed to lower the risk of recurring stress fractures.

Johnson also credited CSK bowling coach Eric Simons for carefully managing his workload and helping him regain match readiness after months away from the game.

Despite the pressure that comes with playing in the IPL and representing a franchise like CSK, Johnson said he is determined to enjoy the experience after such a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

With Jamie Overton ruled out through injury, Johnson is expected to play a bigger role in CSK’s bowling attack as the team continues its push for a playoff spot.

The Australian pacer said the atmosphere and expectations surrounding the IPL only motivate him further, calling CSK “probably the best franchise in the world” and describing the opportunity to play for them as a privilege.

After months of rehabilitation and technical adjustments, Johnson now appears focused on rediscovering his rhythm and developing into an even quicker and more dangerous fast bowler in the coming weeks.
