Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 will officially return on July 17 with a repeat of the 2024 final, as reigning champions Jaffna take on runners-up Galle in the tournament opener at the SSC Grounds in Colombo.
The upcoming edition marks the comeback of Sri Lanka’s premier T20 franchise competition after a two-year gap, with the last season having been played in 2024. The opening match will begin at 7:30 PM local time under lights and will also feature an official opening ceremony to launch the new season.
Initially scheduled to begin on July 10, the tournament timeline has now been finalised with the competition running from July 17 to August 8, while August 9 has been designated as a reserve day for the final.
The SSC Grounds in Colombo will host the opening leg from July 17 to 19 before the tournament moves to Dambulla and then Kandy. The knockout matches and final will later return to Colombo, this time at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
The 2026 edition will feature five teams representing Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Galle and Dambulla. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is yet to officially announce the final franchise identities and ownership structures, with more details expected closer to the tournament.

- July 28-August 2: Kandy Leg – Pallekele International Cricket Stadium
- August 5 & 7: Qualifiers and Eliminator – R. Premadasa Stadium
- August 8: Final – R. Premadasa Stadium
- August 9: Reserve Day
The player registration window opened on May 8 and will close on May 20, while franchises can complete direct signings until May 22. Unlike the previous two editions, which featured auctions, the 2026 season will return to a player draft system scheduled for June 1.
One of the biggest changes this year is the removal of player retention, meaning every franchise will rebuild its squad from scratch. Teams must have a minimum of 18 players, with the option to extend squads to 20 by adding two additional local players.
In a bid to strengthen Sri Lanka’s domestic talent pipeline, SLC has also made it mandatory for every squad to include two Emerging Under-23 local players, with at least one featuring in the playing XI. Each team must also field four overseas players in every match.
The league’s player registration rules had earlier drawn criticism after an initial draft stated that Icon and Star category players required at least 250,000 social media followers to register. Following backlash online, SLC removed the requirement from the final guidelines.
LPL organisers have additionally placed strong emphasis on media and fan engagement, with players facing match-fee penalties ranging from 5% to 50% for failing to fulfil promotional and media responsibilities during the tournament.
