Matt Short declines state contract but remains available as Victoria embraces flexible player model
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Even after stepping away from One-Day Internationals, Glenn Maxwell remains open to representing Victoria in domestic 50-over cricket whenever his schedule allows. The experienced all-rounder, who no longer holds a central contract with Cricket Australia, is now focused solely on T20 cricket but hasn’t completely closed the door on List A appearances.
Maxwell, who will turn 38 in October, has reportedly held informal discussions with Victoria about featuring in the One-Day Cup on a need basis. Despite retiring from ODIs after the 2025 Champions Trophy, he has already shown willingness to stay involved—playing two domestic matches last season, including a standout century against Queensland. Those appearances also served as preparation for an international T20 tour in New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Matt Short has also opted against signing a state contract but will continue to represent Victoria when available. The 30-year-old all-rounder, who now lives in Queensland, is embracing a freelance model that allows him to participate in global franchise leagues without restrictions.
Short’s recent commitments included a stint with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, which caused him to miss the Sheffield Shield final last season. However, Victoria has appreciated his dedication, as he continued training and playing despite interstate travel.
This growing trend—where experienced players skip state contracts to maintain flexibility for international T20 leagues—is becoming more common in Australian cricket. It allows players like Maxwell and Short to balance domestic contributions with lucrative global opportunities.
Victoria’s squad for the 2026–27 season remains largely stable, with emerging talents like Fergus O’Neill and Campbell Kellaway securing their spots. Young prospects such as Tom Paddington and Aryan Sharma have been added to the rookie list, reflecting the team’s focus on future development alongside experienced campaigners.
