Yorkshire produced a stunning turnaround to defeat Somerset by 75 runs in their Rothesay County Championship Division One clash at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton, with Joe Root and Dom Bess sharing eight wickets in a match-defining fourth innings.

After conceding a substantial first-innings lead of 112, Yorkshire fought back strongly to set Somerset a target of 260. The visitors’ second innings ended at 371, with Jhye Richardson scoring a gritty half-century before being dismissed by Craig Overton, who finished with figures of 4 for 94.

Chasing 260 on a surface that offered assistance late in the game, Somerset faltered early and never truly recovered. They slumped to 21 for 3, setting the tone for a disappointing batting performance. Despite a fighting 57 from Josh Thomas, the hosts were bowled out for 184 shortly after tea.

Joe Root led the charge with the ball, claiming 4 for 49, while fellow spinner Dom Bess provided excellent support with 4 for 60. Their combined efforts dismantled Somerset’s batting lineup and ensured Yorkshire secured 19 crucial points from the match.

Somerset’s top order once again struggled under pressure. Archie Vaughan and Tom Lammonby fell cheaply to George Hill, while James Rew’s dismissal to Bess left the hosts reeling early in the chase. At lunch, Somerset were 57 for 3, still requiring 203 runs.

A brief recovery came through Tom Abell and Josh Thomas, who added 64 runs for the fourth wicket. However, Bess broke the partnership by dismissing Abell for 41, triggering another collapse. Thomas continued to resist, bringing up a well-compiled half-century, but lacked support from the other end.

Youngster Thomas Rew showed promise with an aggressive 30, but his dismissal to Root proved another turning point. Root struck again soon after, removing Craig Overton and tightening Yorkshire’s grip on the match heading into tea at 167 for 7.

The final session saw Yorkshire wrap things up quickly. Will Smeed fell to Root, and Migael Pretorius followed immediately after with a mistimed shot. Bess then sealed the victory by bowling Alfie Ogborne, leaving Somerset captain Lewis Gregory unbeaten on 22.

The defeat cost Somerset their place at the top of the Division One table, while Yorkshire’s remarkable comeback victory will boost their campaign significantly as the season progresses.
