The Sydney Sixers have appointed James Hopes as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League season. Hopes, 47, replaces long-time coach Greg Shipperd, who was released midway through his contract despite guiding the Sixers to the BBL final earlier this year.

Hopes has signed a two-year deal, marking his first appointment as a head coach after building an extensive résumé as a bowling coach across major T20 leagues, including the IPL, BBL, and Major League Cricket. He has also worked closely with domestic teams such as Queensland and Tasmania, earning a reputation for developing players and building competitive squads.

A former Australian international, Hopes represented Australia national cricket team in 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is. He also enjoyed a distinguished domestic career, captaining Queensland to Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup titles during his 16-year stint in first-class cricket.

Hopes, who played for the Brisbane Heat during the early years of the BBL, expressed his excitement about joining the Sixers. He emphasized the club’s legacy of consistency and competitiveness, along with its strong connection with fans, as key reasons for taking up the role. He also noted his eagerness to work with the current squad and contribute to the team’s future success.

Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes welcomed the appointment, highlighting Hopes’ deep understanding of the modern T20 game. She described him as a highly respected cricketing mind with a proven ability to nurture talent and create high-performing environments across domestic and franchise cricket.

Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder remain the only team yet to appoint a head coach for the next season following their split with Trevor Bayliss. In another coaching change, the Melbourne Renegades have parted ways with Simon Helmot, who is set to take up a new role in an overseas franchise league.

With Hopes at the helm, the Sydney Sixers will look to build on their recent success and remain one of the most consistent teams in the Big Bash League.
