Warwickshire staged a strong fightback against Nottinghamshire on Day 1 of their Rothesay County Championship clash at Trent Bridge, thanks to a brilliant unbeaten century from Ed Barnard and a valuable contribution from Chris Woakes. The visitors recovered from a precarious position to end the day on 375 for 8, despite a superb five-wicket haul by Josh Tongue.

After being put in to bat, Warwickshire struggled early as Nottinghamshire bowlers made key breakthroughs. Tongue led the charge with the ball, finishing with figures of 5 for 91—his fourth five-wicket haul in just eight first-class matches for Nottinghamshire. His fiery spells reduced Warwickshire to 97 for 4 shortly after lunch, putting the hosts firmly in control.

Early wickets, including Alex Davies, Rob Yates, and Dan Mousley, dented Warwickshire’s progress. Mousley provided some resistance with an aggressive 49, but Tongue’s pace and bounce proved difficult to handle. Sam Hain also fell cheaply after lunch, further deepening the संकट.

However, Barnard turned the momentum with a composed yet attacking innings. He built crucial partnerships, first with Beau Webster and later with Woakes, to steady the innings. Barnard reached his century in just 121 balls, striking 15 boundaries and a six in a well-paced knock that anchored Warwickshire’s recovery.

Woakes, returning to the side, played the perfect supporting role with a fluent half-century. The experienced allrounder added 116 runs for the seventh wicket alongside Barnard, frustrating Nottinghamshire’s bowlers and shifting the balance back in Warwickshire’s favour.

Tongue eventually broke the partnership, dismissing Woakes and later picking up his fifth wicket by removing Jordan Thompson, with Ben Duckett taking a sharp catch in the slips. Despite his heroics, Nottinghamshire were unable to prevent Warwickshire from finishing the day in a strong position.

With Barnard still unbeaten on 134, Warwickshire will look to build on their recovery, while Nottinghamshire will aim to capitalize early on Day 2.
