Keith Barker made a dream return to Warwickshire, delivering a match-winning spell as his side defeated Essex by 41 runs in a gripping County Championship Division One clash at Edgbaston.

Defending a target of 206, Warwickshire bowled Essex out for 164 after a dramatic collapse early on the final day. Barker, playing his first Championship match for the club in eight years, turned the game decisively with sensational figures of 4 for 29, including three wickets in a single over that dismantled Essex’s top order.

Essex resumed the day at 11 without loss but quickly crumbled to 21 for 4. Barker struck immediately, trapping Dean Elgar lbw before removing Sam Cook and Charlie Allison in the same over. The early damage left Essex chasing the game from the outset.

The pressure intensified when Ethan Bamber dismissed Matt Critchley, reducing Essex to 21 for 4. Despite a brief resistance, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Luc Benkenstein top-scored with a resilient 39, while a ninth-wicket partnership between Zaman Akhter and Simon Harmer added 51 runs to briefly revive hopes. However, Warwickshire kept their composure under pressure.

Harmer’s dismissal—caught brilliantly by Rob Yates off Beau Webster—proved crucial. Soon after, Akhter fell to a sharp catch from Sam Hain, ending Essex’s resistance.

Earlier, Jordan Thompson also chipped in with a key wicket, while Bamber’s contributions across both innings saw him take his tally to 14 wickets in the opening three matches of the season.

This victory marks Warwickshire’s first win of the campaign, providing a significant boost after a slow start. Meanwhile, Essex will look to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Surrey County Cricket Club at The Oval following consecutive defeats.

With a competitive pitch and fluctuating momentum throughout, the match delivered high-quality cricket and a memorable finish for fans at Edgbaston.
