Australian allrounder Will Sutherland has been ruled out of his much-anticipated return to Yorkshire County Cricket Club after suffering a shoulder injury, dealing a significant blow to the club’s plans for the 2026 season. The 24-year-old, who captains Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades, has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his shoulder following last month’s Sheffield Shield final.

Sutherland was scheduled to feature in two County Championship matches along with the entire T20 Blast campaign. His absence comes as a setback for Yorkshire, especially after his impressive performances during the previous season, where he played three Championship matches and 12 T20 Blast games. He had quickly become a fan favourite and a key figure in the squad.

Confirming the development, Yorkshire stated that Sutherland would no longer be joining the team for this year’s Vitality Blast due to injury, adding that updates regarding a potential replacement would be announced in due course. The club also extended its support, wishing the allrounder a speedy recovery.

Yorkshire’s struggles in T20 cricket continue to be a concern. The club has yet to win the T20 Blast title and has reached Finals Day only three times in its history. Last season, they endured a disappointing campaign, finishing eighth in the North Group with nine losses in 14 matches.

In an effort to rebuild, Yorkshire have revamped their squad for 2026. The club has brought in experienced allrounder Moeen Ali on a T20 contract, alongside Australian recruits Sam Whiteman and AJ Tye, both of whom previously tasted success with the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League.

However, Sutherland’s injury adds to a growing list of concerns. Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq was also recently ruled out due to injury and has been replaced by Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali. Netherlands seamer Logan van Beek is set to serve as another overseas option.

Yorkshire’s County Championship campaign has also begun on a shaky note, with a draw against Glamorgan followed by a heavy defeat to Hampshire. Head coach Anthony McGrath has hinted at changes, with star players Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow expected to bolster the squad in upcoming fixtures.

With key players sidelined and pressure mounting, Yorkshire will need to regroup quickly as they aim to turn their season around in both red-ball and white-ball formats.
