Jemimah Rodrigues takes responsibility after India fall short by 15 runs despite strong partnership with Harmanpreet Kaur
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!India’s narrow defeat in the first T20I against South Africa women’s national cricket team exposed a crucial gap in their innings — the inability to capitalise during key moments. Jemimah Rodrigues acknowledged that the team fell around 15–20 runs short despite a promising foundation built in the middle overs.
India looked set for a total close to 175 when Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur stitched together a steady 71-run partnership for the third wicket. However, Rodrigues’ dismissal at a critical juncture in the 15th over shifted the momentum, leaving India at 119 for 3 and ultimately restricting them to 157.
Reflecting on the innings, Rodrigues pointed out that while Shafali Verma provided a brisk start with 34 off 20 balls, quick wickets of Verma and Smriti Mandhana slowed the scoring rate. Although the partnership with Kaur stabilised the innings, India failed to accelerate when it mattered most.
Rodrigues admitted her dismissal came at the “wrong time,” emphasising that set batters are crucial in taking the innings deep. She expressed determination to take greater responsibility in the upcoming matches and ensure India converts strong positions into match-winning totals.
Despite the batting shortfall, India’s bowlers kept the contest alive until the final over. Performances from Shreyanka Patil and Shree Charani were notable, as they applied pressure and nearly defended the target. However, South Africa chased down the total with five balls to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
Rodrigues also highlighted the challenging pitch conditions, noting slight turn and variable bounce in the first innings. Looking ahead, she believes similar daytime conditions in the next game will create a level playing field, reducing the impact of the toss.
With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled later this year in England and Wales, Rodrigues sees this series as vital preparation. She acknowledged that while India has depth with multiple allrounders, the lower order still lacks sufficient match experience.
India will now aim to bounce back stronger in the next T20I, focusing on better execution with both bat and ball while addressing their inability to capitalise during crucial phases of the game.
