SRH’s overseas pace attack hit by injuries to Jack Edwards, Brydon Carse, and Payne, but boost expected as Pat Cummins nears return
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have signed South African fast-bowling allrounder Gerald Coetzee as an injury replacement for David Payne for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Coetzee joins the franchise for INR 2 crore, adding firepower to a pace attack that has struggled with repeated injury setbacks.
Payne, a 35-year-old left-arm seamer, managed just two appearances for SRH, conceding 70 runs in five overs before being ruled out due to an ankle injury. Interestingly, Payne himself was a replacement signing for Jack Edwards, who withdrew from the tournament ahead of the season with a foot injury, highlighting SRH’s ongoing struggles with overseas fast bowlers.
Coetzee arrives with solid T20 credentials and prior IPL experience. He previously represented Mumbai Indians in 2024, where he picked up 13 wickets in 10 matches, and later played for Gujarat Titans in 2025. His recent form includes an impressive performance against New Zealand earlier this year, where he claimed 3 for 31 in a T20I, underlining his match-winning potential.
SRH’s injury woes don’t end there. England allrounder Brydon Carse was ruled out of the season after suffering a hand injury during a training session, without featuring in a single game. The franchise had earlier brought in Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka as his replacement.
Despite these setbacks, there is positive news for SRH fans. Australian captain Pat Cummins has been cleared to join the squad after undergoing back scans in Sydney. Cummins, who is yet to feature this season, is expected to make his return in the upcoming clash against Rajasthan Royals on April 25 in Jaipur.
Currently placed fifth on the IPL 2026 points table with two wins from five matches, SRH will look to turn their campaign around quickly. Their immediate challenge comes against Chennai Super Kings in Hyderabad, where the revamped bowling unit will aim to deliver a stronger performance.
