“I’m keen to stick to my own strengths,” says 22-year-old after match-winning debut knock
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Australia’s young allrounder Cooper Connolly has made an instant impact in IPL 2026, announcing himself in style with a match-winning performance for Punjab Kings (PBKS). The 22-year-old smashed an unbeaten 72 on debut, earning the Player of the Match award and drawing comparisons with his idol Shaun Marsh, who had a similar breakthrough moment for the same franchise back in 2008.
Like Marsh, Connolly hails from Western Australia and showcased his batting prowess early in his IPL journey. While Marsh had scored 84* in the inaugural season, Connolly’s 72* has already positioned him as one of the emerging stars to watch this season.
Connolly has often spoken about the influence of Shaun Marsh and his brother Mitchell Marsh, with whom he shares a close bond. Growing up watching Shaun, Connolly admired his ability to play on his own terms — something he now aims to replicate in his own career.
Despite playing in a Punjab Kings lineup known for aggressive, power-hitting cricket, Connolly is focused on maintaining his natural style of building an innings. On his debut, he took a cautious start but quickly accelerated, hitting five fours and five sixes, including powerful shots against world-class bowlers like Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada.
Rather than relying purely on big hitting, Connolly describes himself as a “tempo player” who prefers to build rhythm at the crease. He believes that while power is becoming increasingly important in T20 cricket, there are multiple ways to succeed, and understanding one’s strengths is key to consistency.
At PBKS, Connolly is benefiting from the guidance of experienced names like captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. His interactions with Iyer date back to his Australia A tour of India in 2025, where he gained valuable experience on spin-friendly pitches — a stark contrast to conditions in Australia.
That tour proved crucial in shaping his adaptability. Connolly impressed with a 70 in a first-class match in Lucknow and finished as Australia A’s leading run-scorer in the List A series, underlining his ability across formats.
Having already debuted for Australia in all three formats since 2024, Connolly is now working on balancing his approach between red-ball, 50-over, and T20 cricket. He acknowledges that adapting between formats is a challenge but sees it as an opportunity to grow as a cricketer.
Still early in his career, Connolly admits there are aspects of his game he is yet to master. However, his willingness to learn, adapt, and evolve continues to drive his progress.
For now, his focus remains firmly on IPL 2026, where he has made a strong start. If his debut is any indication, Cooper Connolly could play a key role in Punjab Kings’ campaign this season while steadily carving out his place in international cricket.
