In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, the government has appointed former national captain Tamim Iqbal as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The move comes after the dissolution of the previous BCB board, led by Aminul Islam, following allegations of irregularities in the October elections.

Tamim, 37, becomes the youngest BCB president and will head an 11-member ad hoc committee tasked with overseeing cricket operations and restoring governance standards. The committee includes notable names such as former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin and ex-cricketer and commentator Athar Ali Khan, along with Rashna Imam, Mirza Yeasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Tanjil Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam, and Fahim Sinha.

The appointment follows recommendations from a government-appointed investigation committee, which found significant flaws in the election process. Mohammed Aminul Ahesan, director of the National Sports Council (NSC), confirmed that the board was dissolved due to “serious irregularities” and that the ICC has been formally notified. The newly formed ad hoc committee has been given a three-month mandate to conduct free and fair elections while managing day-to-day cricket activities.

Addressing the media, Tamim emphasized transparency and rebuilding trust within Bangladesh cricket. He confirmed his intention to contest the upcoming elections, stating that all stakeholders—including cricketers and organizers—should be encouraged to participate in a fair electoral process. He also highlighted that restoring the board’s reputation after recent controversies is a top priority.

The sports ministry justified its decision under Section 21 of the NSC Act 2018, which allows intervention in governing bodies under exceptional circumstances. The BCB has been under scrutiny in recent months due to governance issues, Bangladesh’s absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and allegations of political interference.

Adding to the turmoil, multiple board directors have stepped down since the beginning of the year, further weakening the administration. Aminul Islam had earlier expressed his intention to continue as president despite mounting pressure, but the government ultimately intervened following the investigation report.

Tamim Iqbal, widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers, represented the country in 391 international matches across formats. He captained the national side to 21 wins in 38 matches, including a historic ODI series victory against South Africa in 2022. After retiring from international cricket in 2025, his career was cut short due to a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match.

With his appointment, Tamim now faces the dual challenge of stabilizing the BCB and ensuring a smooth transition to an elected board, marking a crucial phase for the future of Bangladesh cricket.
