Teen sensation Sebastian Morgan and Ryan Higgins star as Middlesex secure rare opening-round County Championship victory
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Teenage fast bowler Sebastian Morgan produced a sensational career-best spell of 4 for 48 to lead Middlesex to a commanding innings victory over Gloucestershire at Lord’s, marking their first opening-round win in the County Championship since 2018.
The 18-year-old England Under-19 international made the breakthrough at a crucial stage, striking twice in consecutive deliveries to derail Gloucestershire’s resistance. Ryan Higgins then delivered a clinical spell of 3 for 18 to wrap up the innings and seal a comprehensive win for the hosts.
Resuming the day needing 109 more runs to avoid an innings defeat, Gloucestershire adopted a cautious approach, with Ollie Price and Miles Hammond focusing on survival. Middlesex captain Toby Roland-Jones set the tone early with a disciplined spell, conceding very little as the visitors struggled to build momentum.
The introduction of Morgan proved decisive. After testing Hammond with probing deliveries, the young seamer forced an edge to Joe Cracknell before trapping James Bracey lbw off the very next ball, nearly completing a memorable hat-trick. Although Graeme van Buuren denied him the milestone, Middlesex had seized control.
Higgins capitalised with the new ball, dismissing Van Buuren and Craig Miles in quick succession before clean bowling Price just short of a half-century. Despite a resilient ninth-wicket partnership between Matt Taylor and Will Williams, which added 30 valuable runs, Gloucestershire’s resistance was only temporary.
Josh de Caires broke the stand, while Zafar Gohar delivered the final blow by dismissing last man Gabe Bell to bowl Gloucestershire out for 215 in their second innings.
The victory mirrors Middlesex’s dominant performance against the same opposition at Lord’s at the end of the 2025 season and provides strong momentum heading into their next Division Two clash against Worcestershire. Gloucestershire, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they face Durham in Bristol.
