The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is facing mounting instability after three of its directors—Faiazur Rahman, Shanian Taneem and Mehrab Alam Chowdhury—resigned within hours of each other following a marathon board meeting in Dhaka on Saturday.

Faiazur Rahman reportedly informed the board of his decision shortly after the meeting concluded, while Shanian Taneem and Mehrab Alam Chowdhury submitted their resignations soon after. This latest development brings the total number of BCB directors to step down to six within just six months of the board’s elections held in October last year.

The sudden exits have raised concerns over governance and internal functioning within the Bangladesh Cricket Board, especially as multiple resignations in such a short period are uncommon for elected board members who typically serve full terms.

The wave of resignations began in January when Ishtiaque Sadeque stepped down citing personal reasons. Last month, Amzad Hossain resigned shortly after being removed as media committee chairman. More recently, government-nominated director Yasir Mohammed Faysal exited the board earlier this week, preceding Saturday’s triple resignation.

Details surrounding the discussions during the board meeting remain unclear. The meeting was chaired by BCB president Aminul Islam, with vice-president Faruque Ahmed joining virtually due to illness.

Speaking after the meeting, newly appointed media chairman Mohammad Mokhsedul Kamal stated that the board had not formally discussed the resignations.

According to Kamal, all three directors cited personal reasons for stepping down. He added that Faiazur Rahman had attended the meeting, and news of his resignation surfaced only afterward.

Faiazur, who also served as vice-chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, had recently voiced concerns over the BCB’s lack of initiative in organizing Dhaka league competitions, indicating possible internal disagreements.

The resignations come at a time when the BCB is already under scrutiny. A government-appointed committee is currently investigating the board’s election process and is expected to submit its findings to the sports ministry soon.

Additionally, Sports Minister Aminul Haque has expressed interest in launching further investigations into Bangladesh’s absence from the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka, along with allegations of political favouritism within the board.

With governance questions intensifying and leadership changes mounting, the Bangladesh Cricket Board finds itself navigating one of its most challenging phases in recent years.
