South Africa’s dependable top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career with the Proteas. While stepping away from the international stage, van der Dussen will continue playing domestic and franchise cricket and has committed to mentoring the next generation of South African cricketers.

The 35-year-old, who was on a hybrid central contract with Cricket South Africa (CSA), was not retained for the 2026–27 season and had not featured for the national team in the past seven months. Despite this, van der Dussen remains active in the cricketing circuit, representing the Lions and participating in global T20 leagues.

In an emotional Instagram post, van der Dussen expressed gratitude for his journey, stating that representing South Africa was the greatest honour of his life. He highlighted the resilience and dedication required to wear the Proteas jersey and thanked teammates, coaches, administrators, fans, and his family for their unwavering support.

Van der Dussen leaves behind an impressive international record, having played 18 Tests, 71 ODIs, and 57 T20Is between 2018 and 2025. He made a significant impact in ODI cricket, finishing with the second-highest batting average for South Africa, just behind AB de Villiers. His ODI career includes six centuries and 17 half-centuries, underlining his consistency and reliability in the format.

He was a key figure in multiple ICC tournaments, including the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he emerged as one of South Africa’s standout performers despite the team’s early exit. His contributions continued in the 2023 World Cup, where he scored two centuries, and the 2025 Champions Trophy, where he finished as South Africa’s leading run-scorer.

In T20 internationals, van der Dussen represented South Africa in the 2021 T20 World Cup and also captained the side on several occasions, showcasing his leadership abilities. Although his Test career showed promise early on, he was unable to convert starts into centuries and last featured in the longest format during the 2021–22 season.

Beyond statistics, van der Dussen is widely respected for his professionalism, leadership, and influence in the dressing room. Cricket South Africa’s director of national teams and high performance, Enoch Nkwe, praised him as a player who embodied the true spirit of the Proteas and consistently put the team first.

As he transitions into the next phase of his career, van der Dussen is expected to play a vital role in shaping young talent through coaching and mentorship, ensuring his legacy continues beyond the field.
