Middlesex Cricket Club is facing a deepening crisis ahead of the 2026 county season, as former England captain Mike Gatting leads a group of prominent ex-players calling for board resignations at the club’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 15.

In an open letter reported by ESPNcricinfo, Gatting is joined by cricketing legends including Desmond Haynes, Mike Selvey, John Emburey, Mark Ramprakash, and Clive Radley, along with four former club presidents. The group has strongly criticised Middlesex’s leadership, describing the club’s administration as a “structural mess” lacking accountability, transparency, and effective governance.

Middlesex Financial and Administrative Troubles

Middlesex’s struggles are not new. The club has been battling financial instability for years and was placed under special measures by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in September 2023. Key issues include a costly pension miscalculation and an ongoing legal dispute with former CEO Richard Goatley, who is reportedly suing the club for over £1 million.

The situation worsened recently when Middlesex had to postpone a scheduled media-day photocall due to delays in receiving their playing kits—an incident that further highlighted operational inefficiencies within the club.

Leadership Under Fire

The letter sharply criticises the current leadership for lacking cricketing expertise. It points out that only one board member, former England fast bowler Steven Finn, has first-class cricket experience. The absence of experienced cricketing voices in decision-making roles has, according to the signatories, contributed to poor standards both on and off the field.

The club’s CEO, Andrew Cornish, was placed on leave in November 2025 amid an investigation by the Cricket Regulator. Since then, MCC official Mahdi Choudhury has been acting in a temporary executive role, increasing the involvement of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in Middlesex affairs.

Concerns Over Team Performance and Culture

Once regarded as a powerhouse in English cricket, Middlesex is now struggling competitively in Division Two of the County Championship after relegation. Former players have expressed concern over a declining team culture, with the side reportedly being viewed as “a soft touch” by rival counties.

The letter also highlights issues in coaching standards and player development, stating that inadequate training environments have led to underperformance and a lack of competitive edge.

Grassroots Development and Missed Potential

Despite having access to one of the largest and most diverse talent pools in England—covering 17 London boroughs and a population of around 4.5 million—Middlesex has failed to effectively nurture emerging talent.

Financial constraints have limited investment in grassroots cricket, including the upkeep of non-turf pitches in local communities. This has further hampered the club’s ability to convert young potential into professional success.

Call to Action Ahead of AGM

The signatories claim their concerns have been ignored for over a year, prompting them to go public. With chairman Richard Sykes refusing to step down, they are now urging club members to attend the AGM in large numbers and demand accountability from the board.

They emphasized that Middlesex, as a member-owned club, must prioritize transparency and engagement with its supporters to avoid “drifting towards irrelevance.”

What Lies Ahead for Middlesex

Middlesex will kick off their 2026 County Championship campaign against Gloucestershire under new head coach Peter Fulton. However, uncertainty remains, with no overseas signing confirmed yet.

The club has declined to comment publicly on the situation but stated that the issues raised in the letter will be addressed during the AGM. They also expressed openness to discussions with concerned former players.
