After a match-winning Sheffield Shield final performance, former Australia pacer Ryan Harris believes Nathan McAndrew deserves a Test debut amid growing calls for national selection
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Former Australia fast bowler Ryan Harris has thrown his support behind South Australia’s standout performer Nathan McAndrew, stating that the all-rounder should already be in the frame for a Test debut.
McAndrew strengthened his case with a stellar Player-of-the-Match performance in the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria, playing a crucial role in South Australia’s back-to-back title triumph. His all-round display — scoring 17 and 60 with the bat and picking up key wickets across both innings — underlined his value as a dependable match-winner.
The highlight of McAndrew’s performance came in the second innings, where his gritty 60 formed part of a vital 105-run partnership with Alex Carey. The stand rescued South Australia from a precarious position and set up a competitive target. With the ball, McAndrew delivered consistently, claiming key wickets including Peter Handscomb and Sam Harper, before finishing with impressive figures in the final innings to seal victory.
Ryan Harris praised McAndrew’s consistency and work ethic, pointing out that the pacer has been among the leading wicket-takers in domestic cricket for several seasons. Since joining South Australia in 2021, McAndrew has taken over 180 wickets in the Sheffield Shield at an average of just above 23, including multiple five-wicket hauls — numbers that rival the best in the competition.
Despite his performances, McAndrew faces stiff competition for a place in Australia’s Test XI, with an established pace attack featuring Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland. Acknowledging this, McAndrew remains realistic about his chances but is focused on maintaining his form and contributing to his team’s success.
Selectors have already taken notice, with McAndrew featuring in Australia A and Prime Minister’s XI squads. With a packed Test schedule ahead, opportunities could arise, especially if injuries impact the current fast-bowling lineup.
Opposition players have also recognised McAndrew’s effectiveness, describing him as relentless and highly accurate. His ability to consistently challenge batters, combined with his all-round skills, makes him a strong candidate for higher honours.
