Nathan McAndrew, Liam Scott, and Henry Thornton starred with the ball, taking three wickets each as Victoria suffered a dramatic collapse in their chase of 196.
In a match filled with twists, Victoria appeared in control at 102 for 3 late on day four. However, the South Australian pace trio triggered a stunning turnaround, dismantling the batting lineup as the hosts lost 7 wickets for just 37 runs. The victory marked the first time South Australia have won back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles and also ended a decade-long wait for an away team to win a final.
South Australia’s path to victory was far from straightforward. They failed to earn any batting bonus points in the first innings and conceded a 63-run lead. Their struggles continued in the second innings, slumping to 122 for 7 before a crucial partnership between Alex Carey and Nathan McAndrew helped set a competitive target.
The final day began with Victoria’s nightwatchers, Mitchell Perry and Todd Murphy, showing intent by scoring 10 runs off the opening over. However, Liam Scott quickly shifted momentum, dismissing Murphy with a delivery that found the edge, comfortably taken by Carey behind the stumps.
McAndrew then tightened the screws, trapping Perry lbw with a sharp delivery that stayed in line. Victoria’s troubles deepened as Ollie Peake fell soon after, edging another Scott delivery to Carey, who impressed with a brilliant diving catch.
With the pressure mounting, Victoria slipped to 120 for 8. Will Sutherland and Fergus O’Neill briefly resisted, adding valuable runs, but Henry Thornton’s pace proved decisive. Sutherland edged a rising delivery to first slip, where Jason Sangha completed a neat catch.
Thornton then sealed the victory in style, delivering a sharp offcutter that breached O’Neill’s defence and crashed into the stumps, sparking jubilant celebrations among the South Australian players.
Nathan McAndrew was named Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance, playing a pivotal role with both bat and ball in one of the most memorable Sheffield Shield finals in recent history.
