South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt is determined to turn things around in the ODI series against New Zealand after a disappointing 4-1 defeat in the T20Is. With ICC Women’s Championship points on the line and qualification for the 2029 ODI World Cup in focus, Wolvaardt has emphasized the importance of delivering strong performances in the upcoming three-match series.

Speaking ahead of the first ODI in Christchurch, Wolvaardt admitted that the team fell short in the T20I format but remains confident about their ODI strategy. She highlighted that South Africa have been consistent in the 50-over format in recent months and are looking to build on that momentum.

“We’ve had some good reflections and discussions after the T20Is. This ODI series is an opportunity for us to improve and get back to our best. Our plans for this format are solid, and it’s about executing them better,” Wolvaardt said.

South Africa head into the series with a strong ODI record, having reached the semi-finals of the 2022 Women’s World Cup and finishing as runners-up in 2025. They are currently placed third in the ICC Women’s Championship standings, behind New Zealand and Sri Lanka, after securing a 2-1 series win over Pakistan earlier this year.

Wolvaardt underlined the significance of every match in the championship cycle, stating that accumulating points early can ease pressure later in the qualification race. “The points are super important. We want to put ourselves in a strong position early so we don’t have to scramble towards the end. Every game carries high stakes,” she added.

The South African squad features several in-form players, including Sune Luus, Annerie Dercksen, Tazmin Brits, and Nonkululeko Mlaba, who played key roles in the recent series win over Pakistan. However, they face a confident New Zealand side that has been in excellent form, including a dominant T20I performance against South Africa.

Acknowledging the challenge, Wolvaardt noted that New Zealand are a well-prepared team with clear strategies. She stressed the need for South Africa to adopt a more proactive and fearless approach in the ODIs to put the hosts under pressure.

When the two sides last met in the ODI World Cup, South Africa secured a convincing six-wicket win, chasing down 231 with ease. Wolvaardt will be hoping for a similar performance as her team looks to bounce back and strengthen their position in the championship standings.
