New Zealand head coach Rob Walter has identified fast bowler Ben Sears’ full-series fitness as one of the biggest positives from the Black Caps’ five-match T20I series against South Africa. Despite losing the series 3-2 after leading 2-1, New Zealand gained valuable insights, especially from their emerging players.

Sears stood out as the joint-highest wicket-taker, claiming eight wickets in five matches at an impressive average of 14.50 and an economy rate of 6.44. Known for his pace of over 140kph and ability to extract steep bounce, Sears’ performance was particularly encouraging given his recent injury struggles.

Walter emphasized that Sears’ ability to stay fit and play consecutive matches was more significant than just his on-field performance. After missing key tournaments like the 2025 Champions Trophy and dealing with recurring hamstring injuries during MLC 2025, Sears worked his way back through domestic cricket and rehabilitation programs.

The young pacer also benefited from guidance by senior fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, gaining insights into bowling lengths, field placements, and match awareness. With Ferguson unavailable later in the series, Sears stepped up as a key bowler, delivering crucial spells in Wellington and Christchurch.

Walter also pointed out the importance of this series for New Zealand’s less experienced players, many of whom stepped in due to the absence of senior stars participating in IPL and PSL. He noted that facing international-level pressure, especially in chase situations, provided invaluable learning experiences.

Looking ahead, New Zealand will tour Bangladesh in April for a limited-overs series. Walter sees this as another opportunity for the young squad to test themselves in challenging subcontinent conditions and continue their development on the international stage.

Overall, while the series result did not go in New Zealand’s favor, the return to form and fitness of Ben Sears, along with the exposure gained by emerging players, marks a positive step forward for the team.
