The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially appointed former national captain Habibul Bashar as the chairman of the selection committee for the Bangladesh men’s cricket team. Bashar succeeds Gazi Ashraf, whose tenure concluded in February, marking a significant change in the team’s selection leadership ahead of major international tournaments.

Habibul Bashar brings extensive experience to the role, having led Bangladesh in 18 Test matches and 69 One Day Internationals (ODIs). He previously served as a selector for the men’s team for over a decade, from 2013, before taking charge of the women’s selection panel for a year. Prior to this appointment, Bashar was working as the head of BCB’s age-group cricket development, making his transition to chief selector a strategic move by the board.

The BCB has retained Hasibul Hossain as part of the selection panel, ensuring continuity from the previous committee led by Ashraf. Notably, the panel had been operating with just two selectors over the past six months following the departure of Abdur Razzak last year.

In a move to strengthen the selection committee, the board has also included former Bangladesh cricketers Naeem Islam and Nadif Chowdhury. Naeem, an experienced all-rounder with eight Tests and 59 ODIs under his belt, continues to be a dominant performer in domestic cricket, amassing over 11,000 first-class runs, including 34 centuries. Meanwhile, Nadif Chowdhury, who represented Bangladesh in three T20 Internationals, has been actively involved in talent development as an age-group selector.

The selection process saw multiple former cricketers, including Javed Omar and Mohammad Rafique, being interviewed after the BCB invited applications for the role last month. Following a thorough evaluation, Bashar was chosen to lead the revamped panel.

According to the BCB’s official press release, the newly formed four-member selection committee will serve until the conclusion of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, ensuring stability and long-term planning for Bangladesh cricket.
