Three-wicket haul vs West Indies strengthens King’s case, but competition with Georgia Wareham keeps Australia’s XI uncertain
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Alana King’s impressive return to T20 Internationals has created a welcome headache for Australia’s selectors ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The legspinner delivered a match-winning performance in the opening T20I against West Indies in St Vincent, picking up 3 for 14 and reminding everyone of her match-winning capabilities.
Despite being left out of the recent T20I series against India, King made a strong statement with key wickets, including West Indies captain Hayley Matthews and power-hitter Deandra Dottin. Her ability to break partnerships and adapt across different phases of the game has significantly boosted her chances of selection for the global tournament.
However, Australia’s squad composition remains highly competitive. Georgia Wareham continues to be viewed as the first-choice legspinner, thanks to her consistency and control, particularly in the middle overs. In the same match, Wareham was used sparingly, while captain Sophie Molineux experimented with bowling combinations, further highlighting the depth in Australia’s spin department.
King acknowledged the competition but emphasized her focus on versatility and adaptability. Having worked on becoming a “three-phase bowler,” she aims to contribute beyond just middle overs, especially in the fast-paced T20 format. Her recent performances, coupled with a strong strike rate since the start of 2025, underline her growing importance in the squad.
Australia’s selection puzzle is further complicated by Molineux’s return from injury, adding another spin option. While the idea of playing four spinners has been discussed, it may not be a practical approach in English conditions during the T20 World Cup, where seamers often play a crucial role.
With limited opportunities in a tightly scheduled series against West Indies, King remains focused on making the most of every chance. As Australia fine-tunes its squad for the World Cup, her performances will continue to play a key role in shaping the final XI.
The ongoing T20I series, followed by ODIs in St Kitts, will provide further clarity for selectors as they look to strike the right balance between experience, form, and conditions ahead of the marquee tournament.
