India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that winning the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 is the team’s biggest target in the coming years. The Indian skipper admitted that the painful defeat in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Final still motivates the squad to aim higher.

Speaking during the Board of Control for Cricket in India awards ceremony on Star Sports, Gill said India came extremely close to lifting the trophy in 2023 and the team is determined to go one step further in the next edition.

According to Gill, winning a World Cup for the country remains the ultimate dream for every cricketer. With the next tournament scheduled to take place across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October–November 2027, the Indian team will have another opportunity to chase that long-awaited ODI title.

Meanwhile, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that if he could replay one match from his career, it would be the 2023 ODI World Cup final held at Narendra Modi Stadium. The explosive batter said he would love another chance to relive that moment and turn the result in India’s favour.

Suryakumar also highlighted the importance of India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, calling it the “spark” that ignited a wave of success for Indian cricket. According to him, that triumph gave players across men’s and women’s teams the belief and experience required to win major ICC tournaments.

He added that once India understood what it takes to win an ICC trophy, the mindset of the teams changed significantly. Since then, various Indian squads across age groups and formats have continued to chase global titles with greater confidence.

With the momentum building, both Gill and Suryakumar believe the focus now is to maintain this winning culture and aim to add more ICC trophies to India’s cabinet in the years leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
