India fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been fined 15% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Arshdeep was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.”

The incident took place in the 11th over of New Zealand’s chase of 256, when Arshdeep fielded the ball on his follow-through and threw it towards the stumps. The throw struck Daryl Mitchell on the pads, leading to a brief moment of tension between the players.

Arshdeep initially walked back to his mark without immediately apologising, which prompted Mitchell to approach him and seemingly question the throw. India captain Suryakumar Yadav quickly stepped in to calm the situation, while umpire Richard Illingworth also had a brief conversation with the bowler. Arshdeep later apologised to Mitchell after the over.

Speaking after India’s 96-run victory, Arshdeep clarified that the throw was accidental.

“Just went to apologise to Mitchell. My throw reverse-swung and hit him so I just wanted to say sorry to him for that. It was not intentional,” he said in a post-match interview with Harsha Bhogle.

In a video later shared on New Zealand’s team social media accounts, Arshdeep was again seen apologising to Mitchell, with the two players shaking hands and putting the incident behind them.

The charge against Arshdeep was laid by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, along with third umpire Allahuddien Paleker and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock.

This was Arshdeep Singh’s first offence in a 24-month period. Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50% of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
