Australia legspinner Adam Zampa has decided not to play for New South Wales (NSW) in the One-Day Cup final against Tasmania, ensuring that young legspinner Tanveer Sangha retains his spot in the team. Sangha has been in excellent form throughout the tournament and currently leads the wicket-taking charts, making him a crucial part of the NSW bowling attack.

With Australia exiting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier than expected and the final rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts with Australia’s women’s ODI series against India, several Australian white-ball players became available for their domestic teams. Zampa was among those available and was initially keen to play in the final.

However, conditions at Bellerive Oval in Hobart are not expected to favour the inclusion of two legspinners in the playing XI. After discussions with NSW management, Zampa chose to step aside to avoid affecting Sangha’s place in the team.

NSW chief performance officer Greg Mail revealed that Zampa was mindful of the impact his selection could have on the younger spinner. According to Mail, Zampa made it clear that he did not want his availability to come at the expense of Sangha, who is still developing his game and has been a standout performer in the tournament.

Sangha, who has already represented Australia in 11 international matches, has taken 18 wickets in the competition at an impressive average of 18.05. His consistent performances have played a key role in NSW reaching the One-Day Cup final.

While Zampa will not feature in the final, NSW will still have a strong bowling lineup. Pace bowlers Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis are set to play, adding depth and experience to the team’s pace attack. Abbott recently featured in the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, further strengthening the side.

However, NSW will be without their captain Jack Edwards, who continues to recover from a hamstring injury and remains unavailable for the final.

Tasmania, who earned hosting rights after winning their first five matches of the tournament, will also field a strong bowling attack. Nathan Ellis and Matt Kuhnemann are expected to lead their bowling unit as they aim to secure the Dean Jones Trophy.

The One-Day Cup final was originally scheduled for February 28 but was moved to allow Tasmania to host the match at Bellerive Oval. The change was made due to a scheduling clash with Australia’s women’s ODI series against India, which took place at the same venue on February 27 and March 1.

New South Wales Squad:
Kurtis Patterson (captain), Sean Abbott, Joel Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hadley, Liam Hatcher, Sam Konstas, Josh Philippe, William Salzmann, Lachlan Shaw, Tanveer Sangha.
