NSW wicketkeeper Tahlia Wilson earns maiden call-up as Grace Harris is left out of the squad
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Australia have rested star allrounder Annabel Sutherland for their upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies as part of a workload management strategy ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, captain Sophie Molineux is expected to feature in the series but could be managed carefully as she continues recovering from a back injury.
Sutherland recently delivered an outstanding performance against India women’s national cricket team, earning Player of the Series honours after scoring a memorable century in the Test at the WACA and claiming six wickets across the series. She had earlier opted out of the Women’s Premier League season with Delhi Capitals Women following a demanding schedule that included the ODI World Cup and the Women’s Big Bash League.
National selector Shawn Flegler explained that the decision to rest Sutherland was part of a long-term plan to keep her fresh for upcoming global tournaments. The selectors believe the extended break will help ensure she returns at peak fitness for the T20 World Cup later this year.
Captain Molineux, who recently took over as Australia’s full-time cross-format leader following the retirement of Alyssa Healy, is making steady progress after missing the final two ODIs and the Test against India due to back soreness. While she is expected to play during the West Indies tour, team management may limit her appearances to prioritise the T20 matches as preparation for the World Cup.
The tour also marks a transition phase for the Australian side, with a slightly revamped batting order and new leadership dynamics. Molineux impressed during the recent T20I series against India and has already begun shaping her leadership approach as the team enters a new era.
If Molineux misses any matches, vice-captains Ashleigh Gardner and Tahlia McGrath are likely to step in to lead the side.
Young left-arm pacer Lucy Hamilton, who impressed during the Perth Test, is in line to make her T20I debut. Allrounder Nicola Carey retains her place in the squad after her recent recall, while Kim Garth has recovered from a quad injury and is available for selection.
Meanwhile, explosive batter Grace Harris has been left out of the squad, although selectors confirmed she remains in contention for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
New South Wales wicketkeeper Tahlia Wilson has received her first call-up to the national squad as a backup for Beth Mooney. Wilson will join the touring group after the Women’s National Cricket League final on March 21.
Originally, the tour schedule included a historic Test match that would have marked the first meeting between Australia and the West Indies women’s national cricket team in the format in 50 years. However, the match was later removed from the itinerary. The ODI series will still carry important Women’s Championship points that contribute to qualification for the next 50-over World Cup.
The T20I series will be played in St Vincent on March 19, 21 and 23, followed by the ODI matches in St Kitts on March 27, 29 and April 2.
